2. Compression Stroke

Next, the intake valve closes, and the piston moves upward, compressing the air-fuel mixture into a smaller volume. This compression makes the mixture more volatile and ready for ignition. In diesel engines, only air is compressed until it becomes hot enough for fuel injection.

3. Power Stroke

At the peak of the compression stroke, a spark plug (in gasoline engines) ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture. The explosion forces the piston downward with great power. This stroke is what generates the mechanical energy that powers the engine. In diesel engines, the fuel is injected into the hot compressed air, causing spontaneous combustion.

4. Exhaust Stroke

Finally, the exhaust valve opens, and the piston moves back up again. This expels the burned gases from the cylinder through the exhaust system, making room for a fresh charge of air and fuel, and the cycle repeats.
